The category isssssssss BUBBLE BLOWING. When I walk into a room, I go into a frenzy. Whatever cooling system working in my head goes on overdrive as my mind heats up to the temperature of a beef patty. It starts estimating the amount of people in the room, followed by a general idea of everyone’s identity, last my subconscious gauges the level of acceptance and safety I’m going to experience. Most of the time, I go into performance mode. My role, a light-brown-squishy trans femme, trying to blend in. My motivation, delight the pants off of everyone or at the very least have friendly interactions.
Sometimes, I feel like SpongeBob SquarePants going into the Thug Tug and everyone is accusing me of being a bubble blower. Less often, these feelings lead me to believe the worst—that I, in fact, am a bubble blower! In the worst case, these feelings get so strong that I don’t want to leave the house. I become a cave dwelling goblin—diving into a giant bowl of ice cream—letting streaming TV take me to another dimension.
And that’s okay. SpongeBob metaphors aside, it’s hard presenting as a trans person in the world. But it’s so necessary to spend every moment of this short life enjoying all the wonder this planet has to offer. But that’s impossible if I remain a goblin. I may be a bubble blower but this world needs more bubble blowers like me. Just like the world needs more wild flowers in the fields and fluffy clouds in the sky.
Next time I stumble into the Thug Tug, under the sea, I hope to see you there too.
