Recently, she’s organized an auction called “A Suitcase Full of Memories” where she will be selling assorted things from her life. The auction includes the leopard pajamas from the “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” music video and the lunch box from the “Time After Time” video. When asked by a reporter why she’s selling all these things, she responded by saying, “It’s only stuff.”

It’s only stuff!?! The iconic skirt made of newspaper that she wore on the “True Colors” album cover?? Yeah, I suppose so. Even if I were to buy the skirt, and keep it in my living room, it would just be a bunch of shredded paper. Maybe it would hold some sort of psychic energy signature of Ms. Lauper and “True Colors” would play in my mind every time I pass it. But it would still just be an object.

 Does this mean that all the old things I own and cherish are just things? Is she trying to tell us that objects are temporary and the experiences we create are the only things of true value in our lives? Maybe. Or maybe she’s just having a yard sale—celebrity style. Either way, I’m going to take this as a reminder of what’s important. Being true to myself, and creating authentic experiences with love and self-expression, for the rest of time. I hope you’ll join me—and Cyndi Lauper.
