The category isssssssss blooming where you’re planted. In the span of about a year, I learned about my indigenous heritage and the two spirit community. I was told stories about how some tribes acknowledged five genders instead of two. Native children were dressed in gender-neutral clothing until it was time for them to choose their gender.
Surrounded by elders, family, and community members, the child would be presented with items associated with certain gender presentations. Then, the child would choose the item that would announce who they are. Masculine-feminine, feminine-masculine, both, or perhaps neither. Finally, the family would address them based on their spiritual essence instead of their physical body.
I’ve wasted countless moments wishing I had that early experience instead of the one I endured. Moments that could have been spent enjoying the present—devising ways to make the world a little better every day. I am who I am in this moment of time on a clear trajectory through space. I’d rather bloom and make the world more beautiful than wilt too early. I hope you will too.
