Once upon a time, I booked a house with friends, overlooking the bay, on Cherry Grove. On the deck I watched birds flying over the water and eventually a deer scrounging around for food, in the neighborhood garbage cans. Out the door, a short walk to the left would lead me to the Ice Palace—the home of the famous underwear parties. To the right was the meat rack which is actually just an extremely hot, dry dirt path where much meat was once procured by lucky gays on midnight strolls.

It’s a queer oasis but it only exists because the gays made it so. And it’s not as unique as it believes itself to be. There are similar queer wonderlands all over the world. In our living rooms, coffee shops, and board game stores. All it takes is for one or more of us to declare a space a bubble of joy. Like our old friends Neil and Buzz who planted the American flag on the moon, we can plant our metaphorical flags everywhere we go. Every place we love can be turned into a place of love.

Just like Fire Island.

Today I intend to stab the ground with my flag, everywhere I go. The coffee shop, gayified. The local card shop: instant queer hang out. My living room: yasssssssssss. And if anyone tries to resist, they won’t. Not for long. Because love is too strong and joy is in our nature. All of us.
